Mutual Dance Theatre: Modern Mix '27
April 30 – May 1, 2027 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts
Modern Mix closes Mutual Dance Theatre's 55th anniversary season on the Aronoff Center's Jarson-Kaplan Theater mainstage: four very exciting choreographers, four very different works, one tour de force of dance featuring Hana Delong (a breathtaking performer who's danced the works of Martha Graham, Doug Varone, Alvin Ailey, and Hope Boykin while at Dallas Black Dance Theater), Rodrigo Almarales (who recently danced in a Ben Stiller movie and is an alum of Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Cincinnati Ballet), Jeanne Mam-Luft (the Artistic Director of Mutual Dance Theatre reprising a canonical work), and Steven P. Evans (Mutual's most recent choreographer in residence, a master of wielding new movement generation within narrative arcs).Year upon year, Modern Mix elicits heartfelt responses from local audiences through a whirlwind of dance by our immensely talented resident company with fascinating national guests. Each attention-demanding iteration creates surprising juxtapositions you won't see anywhere else in Cincinnati.Want to know more? See more? Hana Delong
Hana Delong‘s choreographic chops were first noticed by Mutual Dance Theatre director when her mind-blowing “Postmortem” was presented here in 2023 under Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s banner. A member of DBDT for many years and a furniture maker (!), she trained at the Ailey School and has performed in works by such greats as Martha Graham, Doug Varone, Matthew Rushing, Alvin Ailey, Hope Boykin, and many others, gracing the stages of Jacob’s Pillow, Lincoln Center, and The Joyce. MDT is honored to create a new work by Delong!
Rodrigo Almarales
Rodrigo Almarales makes his Mutual Dance Theatre premiere with a new commission. A former dancer with Cincinnati Ballet, Almarales was born into ballet: both of his parents were principal dancers with Cuba’s National Ballet. Almarales trained at Cuba’s National School of Art, Canada’s National Ballet School, and the Hamburg Ballet School before dancing with Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Boston Ballet. In addition, not only did he recently appear in a Ben Stiller movie, but he also was a finalist on the Italian television show Amici.
Steven P. Evans
Steven P. Evans, a former Mutual Dance Theatre company director, returns with Petrichor (2023). Named for the scent of rain after a long dry spell, dancers move beneath relief made visible: an ascending and descending canopy of lightbulbs. Its reprisal is due to becoming a favorite of Artistic Director Jeanne Mam-Luft who describes it as “epic, an odyssey.”
Jeanne Mam-Luft
The company will also re-stage a canonical piece from 2014, /SHIFT/ by Jeanne Mam-Luft. Originally an evening-length concert, this 10-minute excerpt is a powerful depiction of society after a catastrophic event and shifts in power. /SHIFT/ holds the Mutual Dance Theatre record for juried festivals across the country and returns to the stage where it began.

He however, continues to teach and choreograph around the world.
Hana Delong
Hana Delong is a freelance dancer and choreographer from Orlando, FL. She began her formal training at the Orlando Ballet School as well as the Dance Magnet Program at Dr. Phillips High School. Hana graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Adelphi University in Long Island, NY and furthered her training as a three-year scholarship student and an Oprah Winfrey Foundation scholarship recipient at The Ailey School, the official school of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Hana was a member of Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s DBDT: Encore! (formerly DBDT II) in Dallas, TX for one season and then promoted into Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s (DBDT), main company where she danced for nine seasons. With DBDT, Hana has danced leading roles in works by Darrell Moultrie, Hope Boykin, Christopher Huggins, Matthew Rushing, Kirven Douthit Boyd, and many more. Through DBDT and other organizations throughout her professional career, Hana has traveled and performed both nationally and internationally. Theaters and festivals Hana has danced in include Battery Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, Lincoln Center, The Joyce, Summer Stage, and New York City Center. Hana has choreographed for Dallas Black Dance Theatre and CDT Jamaica.
Steven P. Evans
Steven P. Evans joined Mutual Dance Theatre when it was MamLuft&Co. Dance in 2014. During 3 seasons as a Company Member, Evans’ talent was quickly apparent: he performed lead roles and heavily contributed choreography in Artistic Director Jeanne Mam-Luft’s canon of works including /SHIFT/, Maps, and Memoriam. After starring The Double by Susan Honer, an evening-length work based on the eponymous Dostoevsky novella, Honer led the creation of seminal company works The Tragedy of Time (which premiered at the Cincinnati Art Museum in conjunction with the WWI Centennial) and Double|Sided (which premiered at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center to sold-out audiences). As a Company Member, Evans also collaborated with Dutch sound artist, Allard Van Hoorn through a partnership with the Contemporary Arts Center. Beginning in 2020, Evans led the Company as Director whilst creating new stageworks. Evans hails originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography at Ohio University, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. While at Ohio University, he was the recipient of the Undergraduate Student Enhancement Award and the College of Fine Arts Creative Research Award for his project “Improvisational Dance: Performance Development, Exploration, and Movement Stylization.” Evans apprenticed with Sean Curran Company in New York City in 2012.
Jeanne Mam-Luft
Jeanne Mam-Luft‘s choreographic work returns to the stage for the first time since 2019, pre-COVID. Mam-Luft is the Artistic and Executive Director of Mutual Dance Theatre and Arts Centers and founder of the MamLuft&Co. Dance-side of the organization. Mam-Luft holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Texas Woman’s University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University. Mam-Luft studied at American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival (on full scholarships), as well as at Carnegie Mellon’s acclaimed School of Drama, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and Point Park University. Her training includes study with Sarah Gamblin (Bebe Miller Dance Company), Mary Williford-Shade (Dance Alloy), James Caton (Ballet Metropolitan), Melissa M. Young and Nycole Ray (Bruce Wood Company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre), Ming-Lung Yang (Trisha Brown Dance Company), Tatiana Baganova (Provincial Dances Russia), as well as many others. As an artist-producer, Mam-Luft has produced dozens of evening length and nearly 100 shorter works (35 of which she was lead choreographer). She was the first and only dance artist to be named a City of Cincinnati Arts Ambassador Fellow in support of an original dance-for-camera she choreographed, filmed, and edited. She has been the curator of the Jefferson James Contemporary Dance Theater Series since 2021. She is certified in Labanotation from the Dance Notation Bureau and is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional. She served on the board of OhioDance for 6 years and has been a grant panelist for the Ohio Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Mam-Luft has served on juries for Full Radius Dance (Atlanta, Georgia) and The Cincy Fringe Festival, among others. She was raised in Texas after her family escaped the Khmer Rouge genocide. Most of her works are inspired by her family’s experiences, the need for belonging and connection, as well as the unique physical and emotional range that dancers are capable of. Her choreography has been performed in Texas, Virginia, South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Mam-Luft is also a graphic designer, photographer, and sewist.
